SUFFERING -- overcoming life's problems
"Inconvenience or problem?"
November 2 -- Read Exodus 23:20-33
Life is lumpy. A lump in the oatmeal and a lump in
the breast are not the same lump. In Robert Fulgham's
book Uh! Oh!, he tells a story about himself in which
he complains bitterly about the food served at this
camp where he worked. It was grossly unfair of the management
of the camp to serve the same food day after day. He
would not stand for it and furthermore would let them
know. He had his rights, you know. After his tirade,
an elderly gentleman, who had survived a concentration
camp in Germany, looked at him with pity and disgust
and responded, "Fulgham, life is lumpy. Your problem
is that you don't know the difference between an inconvenience
and a problem. The sooner you figure this out and quit
complaining about the small stuff, the better it is
going to be for you and everyone around you."
- Helen Keller was asked if being blind was the worst
thing that could happen. "No, worse than that
is having two good eyes and seeing nothing."
- We are called to be the very best version of ourselves
that we can possibly be, and then to give it all away
to a world that is desperately hurting.

- Joy depends on what you are, not what you have.

- This is the true joy in life, being used for a purpose
recognized by yourself as a mighty one; being a force
of nature instead of a feverish little clod of ailments
and grievances complaining that the world does not
devote itself to making you happy. I want to be thoroughly
used up when I die, for the harder I work, the more
I live. I rejoice in life for its own sake. Life is
no "brief candle" to me. It is a sort of
splendid torch which I have got hold of for the moment,
and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible
before handing it on to future generations.
